Cricket protein, the new superfood for athletes

As athletes, we are constantly looking for nutritional products that will help us get stronger, faster and perform better. In a market packed with options that use unwanted extra ingredients, Näak created a high-performance and eco-friendly brand that is based around one simple ingredient: cricket.

Cricket is a superfood

Eating insects is slowly becoming a trend in North America, but did you know that cricket is actually a superfood with tons of nutritional benefits for athletes?

  • High in complete protein (2 to 3 times more than beef or chicken)

Protein has an energetic role during long-term effort, but the main function of protein lies in muscle gain and muscle repair after exercising. 

  • High in calcium (1.6 times more than milk)

Calcium has many roles in the human body, including bone health and muscle contraction. It is thus an essential part of our diet.

  • High in iron (2 times more than spinach)

Iron is one of the components of red blood cells; the cells specialized in the transport of oxygen. It is therefore particularly important for athletes. 

  • High in omega-3 (as much as salmon, and with the perfect ratio of 1:3 with omega-6)

Often called "good fats", omega-3 and omega-6 are two fatty acids essential to our body, given that our body cannot synthesize them on it's own. They have many crucial functions in our health.

Cricket is sustainable

Beyond the myriad of health and performance benefits for athletes, you can rest assured that you’re not hurting the planet when consuming cricket.

Cricket powder, is one of the most sustainable sources of complete protein in the world. To produce the same quantity of meat compared to beef, cricket requires 12 times less feed, 2000 times less water, and produces 100 times less greenhouse gases!

A huge difference when we know that the livestock sector generates as much greenhouse gases as the transport sector, and monopolizes two thirds of the cultivated surfaces on Earth.

In 2013, the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation) published a report that recommends integrating edible insects to our diet, in order to reduce our environmental footprint, and maintain a high quality diet rich in protein and minerals.

Where does our cricket flour come from?

The crickets are farmed in the biggest insect farm in North America: Entomo Farms, located in Ontario.

Cricket energy bars made for endurance athletes

Näak was born from a passion for nutrition and triathlon. It all started in 2016 when we (the two co-founders of Näak) qualified for the Triathlon World Championships.

Looking for a healthy, efficient, and environmentally friendly diet, we couldn’t find an energy bar that suited us and was able to support long-time physical efforts whilst being respectful of the environment.

When we learnt about the benefits of cricket protein, we immediately saw the huge potential for athletes.

With the help of nutritionists and athletes, we developed our three original flavors: Choco-Orange, Choco-Banana and Coco-MacadamiaSince then, we have release two more flavours: Raspberry Apricot and Maple Walnut.

The Näak energy bar is made of a short list of ingredients, all natural and unprocessed. It is a product with no preservatives, no added sugars or food coloring.

The texture is designed to meet the needs of athletes looking for performance as well as ergonomic products. Indeed, the cricket bar does not melt in the heat, with its soft texture, it is easy to swallow during exercise, and finally, it does not crumble!

The cricket energy bar contains 190mg of sodium, a boost in electrolytes to replace those lost during exercise and promote hydration of muscles. It also has 28g of carbs for 6g of protein, a great ratio to better absorb all the nutrients.
